MERIP will be hosting two events as part of the Middle East Studies Association annual conference this year at the Hilton Park Plaza in Boston, MA. First, on November 21 from 8:30–11PM we will be hosting a special reception in the Terrace Room that will feature a live podcast recording with Mohsen Mahdawi, the former Columbia student and Palestine encampment activist fighting deportation proceedings. In conversation with MERIP executive director James Ryan, Mahdawi will discuss his struggle for freedom of speech and his right to remain in the United States, and how it connects with the struggle for Palestinian liberation. The podcast will begin promptly at 8:30, refreshments and beverages will be provided throughout the evening. Please come to hear the latest developments from MERIP and mingle with friends and comrades.

Second, on November 22 at 8:30AM, MERIP is sponsoring the roundtable discussion “Thinking Through Counterrevolution” organized by Toby Jones and Jessica Winegar. Almost 15 years have passed since revolutionary ferment swept across North Africa and the Middle East in 2011\. Revolutionary transformation has been, for now, heavily stymied by more powerful counterrevolutionary forces. It is time to reflect on counterrevolution as not just an accounting of relationships and practices, but also as a globalized condition, one that should be understood broadly and across different levels of society. The roundtable will feature Bassam Haddad, Stacey Philbrick Yadav, Andy Clarno, Shirin Vossoughi, Abdelrazzak Tikriti, Işıl Karacan and Leslie Alexander.

Both events will only be open to those registered for the MESA conference. For information on how to register, click the link below.
