Bassam Haddad teaches political
science at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia and is
author of "The Formation and Development of Economic
Networks in Syria: Implications for Economic and Fiscal Reforms,
1986-2000," in Networks of Privilege: The Politics
of Economic Reform in the Middle East (2004). He is
currently working on his first book on Syria's political economy.
Haddad is co-producer and director of the award-winning documentary
film, "About Baghdad"
and the director and executive producer of the documentary
series "Arabs
and Terrorism."
GHASSAN
MAKAREM
Ghassan Makarem is one of the main organizers of the grassroots
coalition, Sanayeh
Relief Center, providing relief to displaced Lebanese.
He was quoted July 17 by al-Jazeera: " 'There's
a big group of us coordinating relief work, because the government
did not think of this. Yesterday we had 40 schools and around
500 persons in each school, but today I think that number
has doubled or tripled. We were finding them everywhere. There
were people hiding in half-built buildings, on the beach,
if you go to any space in west Beirut you will see people
staying there, sometimes in parking lots.' Those involved
with the operation say the Lebanese government has provided
little support, and facilities for refugees in Beirut are
already overstretched. "

Ahmad Farhat is the representative
of ATTAC Lubnan, which is part of the coalition, Sanayeh
Relief Center, organizing relief for the displaced Lebanese
now in Beirut.

Muna
Kanafani serves on the municipal council in Sidon. She is
helping to organize relief work in the city.

Bibi is director of the Arab
Resource Collective, a non-profit development organization
that works to better childhood,
health, education, communication and community development.
