ROBERT
BLECHER
Robert Blecher is a fellow
at the Center for Human Rights at the University of Iowa and
an editor of Middle East Report. His current project is a
history of partition in Palestine and Israel. He regularly
works as a consultant with a variety of international organizations
in the Middle East, including International Crisis Group and
the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. He commented
today: "When Israel rebuffed Egypt's peace initiatives
in the early 1970s, Anwar al-Sadat launched the October war
in order to force his diplomatic agenda to the fore. The seizure
of the Israeli soldier by Hamas, Gilad Shalit, can be seen
in a similar light: stonewalled since winning the Palestinian
elections, Hamas launched limited military action meant to
achieve a specific political goal and force Israel to negotiate. The
Israeli response in Gaza created the conditions for Hizballah
to intervene on behalf of besieged Palestinians. But it is
not at all clear whether this gambit can succeed in the face
of Israel's overwhelming military superiority."
OMAR
KARMI
