ARANG KESHAVARZIAN
Arang Keshavarzian is an assistant professor at Concordia
University in Montreal, Quebec. His ongoing research on Iran
focuses on various aspects of political activism and democratization.
Commenting on the five-year anniversary of the student protests,
Keshavarzian said today: “The conservative backlash
of recent years against reformers makes protest marking the
anniversary unlikely. However, the student movement remains
a vital part of political environment in Iran today. Reformists
are currently discussing new strategies aimed at reenergizing
and tapping into the tremendous public support for the reform
agenda.”
MICHAEL BROWN
Michael Brown is executive director of Partners for Peace
in Washington, DC. Commenting on his hunger strike, Brown
said today: "I am hunger-striking in solidarity with
Israeli Member of Knesset Azmi Bishara to express my dismay
with Israel's ongoing construction of the segregation barrier
running throughout the West Bank. This barrier is a disaster
for Palestinians and reduces them to living in disconnected
Bantustans. Last week’s decision by the Israeli Supreme
Court stripped land from the Palestinians. Tomorrow, the International
Court of Justice will issue its opinion on the barrier. I
hope and trust that the judges on this independent body will
recognize an illegal land grab when they see it."
