AVAILABLE FOR INTERVIEWS on
the following topics:
- Transfer of Saddam Hussein into Iraqi legal custody
- Israeli Supreme Court ruling on the wall in West Bank
- Crisis in Sudan
JOE STORK
Joe Stork is Middle East Advocacy Director for Human Rights
Watch. Commenting on the transfer, Stork said: “The
transfer of custody of Saddam Hussein into Iraqi legal custody
is not only appropriate, but it is also absolutely necessary
under international law. How this legal process is conducted
will have tremendous implications for the future of rule of
law in a post-war Iraq. Justice must be done and be seen to
be done. There are reasons for grave concern as to whether
this will happen under the existing format of the Iraq special
tribunal.”
MITCHELL PLITNICK
Mitchell Plitnick is Director of Education and Policy for
Jewish Voices for Peace. He was raised an orthodox Jew and
educated in Yeshiva. His articles have appeared in Jewish
Currents, the UN Observer, Israel Insider and the San Francisco
Chronicle. Commenting on today’s Israeli Supreme Court
ruling, Mitchell said: “While the High Court ruling
is a major step forward, its principles must followed everywhere.
The wall is no substitute for a just peace for both Israelis
and Palestinians, and building it anywhere beyond the Green
Line, including through East Jerusalem, is a major human rights
violation which will only exacerbate the conflict.”
ALI ALI-DINAR
Ali B. Ali-Dinar is president elect of the Sudan Studies Association
and outreach director of the African Studies Program at the
University of Pennsylvania. Commenting on the crisis in Sudan,
Ali-Dinar said: “Secretary Powell’s visit is long
overdue. The tragedy could have been prevented and still more
can be done to hold the Sudanese government accountable. The
ongoing genocide has been sponsored, directed and promoted
by the government for its own narrow political interests.
In the short term, there should be unfettered access for humanitarian
agencies, but this should not substitute for a long-term political
solution.”
