Nadje Al-Ali is a senior
lecturer in social anthropology at the Institute of Arab and
Islamic Studies, University of Exeter. She is a founding member
of Act Together: Women's Action for Iraq ( www.acttogether.org
) and author of Secularism, Gender and the State in
the Middle East: The Egyptian Women's Movement (2000)
and the forthcoming book Her Story Untold: Iraqi Women
Between Dictatorship, Sanctions, War and Occupation
(2007). She commented today: "Iraqi women might be the
biggest losers in the terrible events unfolding in Iraq. On
International Women's Day, Iraqi women do not have much to
celebrate, but despite all obstacles, there are many who continue
to struggle on."
MOUIN
RABBANI
Mouin Rabbani is senior
Middle East analyst with the International Crisis Group, specializing
on Palestine and the Arab-Israeli conflict, and a contributing
editor of Middle East Report . He has published widely
on Palestinian issues and travels to Palestine frequently.
He commented today: "The elections are over, politics
has begun. The key question remains whether or not Fatah will
join Hamas in a coalition government; contrary to appearances
and much posturing, this issue remains unresolved."
